4:06 pm, my flight takes off in an hour and 10 mins, so I’ve got about 45 minutes until I have to actually get on the plane. I’m already past the security checkpoint as I had nothing better to do on the other side. Security check went by smoothly, no beeping, nothing. I’m getting good at them too, very fast with putting everything back into my bag.

It’s pouring outside, and it’s very gray. There appears to be some sort of a fire somewhere on airport land as I can see (and hear) fire trucks out the window. As long as that isn’t my plane….

Radiohead last night was mind-blowing. They played a mix of older stuff (including Bones) as well as some great OK Computer stuff (Exit Music!) and b-sides like Talk Show Host. They sounded perfect, very good musicians, pro. They played everything very close to how it sounded on the albums, except it sounded even better. The Liars opened up for them, and they were alright at best. I liked one of their albums a lot, but they are definitely not a live band. Or maybe I just need to hear them in a smaller venue.

I got absolutely drenched in the rain for radiohead (since it was outdoors) but it was all worth it. I’d do it again.

If you are thinking about seeing them, take my advice and just go and see them. They are really a fantastic sounding band and I will definitely be seeing them again next time. So far this year, all the bands (Mars Volta, NIN, Radiohead, The Cure) I’ve seen live have not disappointed. Seeing TV On The Radio next month, and then Henry Rollins is doing his spoken word in October (which I know will be good) so I have a few more things to look forward to.

I now have to order myself another t-shirt, as i bought 2, but one is for someone and the one that I lost on my way back to the car (that’s right, i lost my $40 radiohead t-shirt in the rainy night. for what it’s worth it was black, and impossible to see anyway)

Los Angeles on an average day

Girl with Flowers, originally uploaded by west_berliner1.

after getting a good night’s sleep in Helena, we went for breakfast at Perkin’s, had some pancakes, and figured it was time to conquer the last 6 hours of driving home.

With a few pit stops along the way, we cruised along to good tunes (such as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and John Frusciante) and made it home at around 7 pm. now it’s time to unpack, upload more photos from the trip, listen to the CDs and read the book I got in the mail, and start getting ready for school. I leave again on Monday the 18th to go see Radiohead live in Vancouver. After that, I look forward to staying home for the remaining 2 weeks before I head back to school for another 8 months of studying.

I’m just getting ready to upload photos from Los Angeles right now, so they should be up later tonight.

I also recommend the new One Day As A Lion CD. That is, if you like(d) Rage Against The Machine.

10:50 am, time to head out, find a subway or something for breakfast, and hit the road. Home tomorrow.

12:12 am, we made it all the way to Helena, MT, the capital of the state of Montana. That also means we’re about 6 hours away from home, so the majority of the drive home is over with. We’re at a Comfort Inn, which is the coldest room I’ve ever been in haha. Someone left the air conditioning on for probably the whole day, on high, and it’s freezing. We drove through 4 States today. I’ll transfer photos from The Getty (and the desert), take a shower , and get about 9 hours of sleep.

Since the drive was quite uneventful today (and lonnnnnnng…), I just remembered a story my cousin told me when we were down in Arizona about some British tourists. These two decided that it would be a fantastic idea to go bike-riding in Death Valley in August (where it’s 55 C out during the day). They hopped on their bikes and about 20 meters later, all their tires blew out from the extreme heat.

Brilliant idea.

Photos from LA and the Mojave tomorrow once I’m home.

1:32 am (MST), Just got into Cedar City, UT after driving for about 8 hours. It took us quite a while to leave LA (we left around 4 pm, PST) as we went to the Getty Center for a few hours.
The Getty Center is a free museum up in the Hollywood Hills where they have collections of paintings and sculptures etc. from different time periods and areas of the world. They had a Bernini exhibit which was very interesting to see. It’s amazing what people could do with really simple tools and a massive piece of marble 300 years ago. They also had some ancient Roman artifacts on display and some really cool impressionist-era paintings.
There was a great exhibit by Austrian photographer Sander which I really enjoyed. He mainly did portraits of working-class people in the early 20th century. I think I’ll try to do more portrait shots once I get home.

The architecture of the Getty complex itself is very cool. It’s very simple;, modern and minimalist. I took a lot of photos of the building itself so I’ll post those as well once I get around to editing them (probably either tomorrow night or once I get home on Tuesday)
Smog was also pretty heavy today. It makes for interesting shots of the city though.

Left the city listening to KROQ, which played M.I.A’s “Paper Planes” again, which will now be the song I remember during my stay in LA.

Once we left the city we headed towards Vegas, stopping in Fontana, CA for dinner, and then stopping past Baker, CA because I wanted to take pictures of Joshua trees in the mojave desert at sunset (I think they turned out awesome, but I’ll see once I dump them on my computer). I also ended up finishing up my roll of film in my other camera. Flip-flops in the desert was an interesting decision. No scorpions thankfully, but lots of broken glass and beer bottles (people are really lame…find a trash can. Fuck.)

Stopped for gas before Vegas, hit Vegas and got stuck in gridlock for a while due to a huge accident on the I-15 N into LV. Looked like a bus either collided with another vehicle or smashed into a concrete median. It didn’t look good, I’ll have to check out online what actually happened.

We ended up driving most of the rest of the way to Cedar City along to Alice Cooper’s Classic Rock show “On The Point” which was really cool actually, he played a lot of good stuff (along with a bunch of stuff that I don’t generally listen to, but enjoyed driving to, since it was all unexpected, and you never knew what they would play next)

Time to go to bed, more driving tomorrow (about 12 hours worth)
